Casa da Amendoeira — Holiday house in Alfama, Lisbon

Located in a quiet but airy square amidst the labyrinthine streets of Alfama, the Casa da Amendoeira is the product of the recent rehabilitation of a small 16th century building. It is structured around a series of courtyards and sunny balconies and overlooks the Tagus and the houses of the city.
Located near the National Pantheon and the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, between the bustle of the Feira da Ladra and the picturesque streets of Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood, this house stakes a claim to the ancient city and its treasures — and to the light reflecting off the immaculate whiteness of its walls.
On the ground floor, the sitting-room is the focal point, the space that gives onto the exterior. Next to it is the kitchen, fitted with all the equipment necessary to cook a light meal, or indeed a more sophisticated one. There is also a restroom on this floor, serving the common areas. Upstairs, there is a full bathroom and two bedrooms, arranged like monastic cells, with views over the river and the city.
In one of the patios, shaded by an almond tree, running water can be heard from a nearby fountain. Another is occupied by a climbing ivy that covers one of the walls. A third, containing a hammock, may function as an inviting open-air bedroom, a place to relax on hot Lisbon nights. And the fourth is filled with water, forming a swimming pool that can be used throughout most of the year. On the top floor, there is a balcony with a view over the river and rooftops — the ideal spot to sip a gin or a glass of wine at sunset.
